Community Support Worker & Team Leader

Community Accommodation & Respite Agency (CARA) — 2001 to 2007, 2008 to 2010

I began my career in disability support, working directly with people living with complex needs and supporting them to live safely, independently, and with dignity. Over time, I stepped into team leadership responsibilities, coordinating staff, managing day‑to‑day operations, and ensuring high‑quality support across multiple accommodation sites. This period shaped my leadership style, my values, and my ability to remain calm, empathetic, and solutions‑focused in challenging environments.

Key Achievements

  • I provided direct support to people with disability, ensuring their safety, wellbeing, and quality of life while building strong, trusting relationships with clients and families.

  • I stepped into team leadership roles, coordinating staff rosters, managing daily operations, and ensuring consistent, high‑quality service delivery across multiple sites.

  • I supported staff through complex behavioural, medical, and emotional situations, helping them remain confident, calm, and focused on person‑centred care.

  • I worked closely with families, guardians, and external providers to ensure clients received holistic, coordinated support.

  • I documented incidents, behavioural observations, and support plans with accuracy and clarity, contributing to better decision‑making and improved client outcomes.

  • I helped embed a culture of respect, safety, and professionalism within the teams I worked with, modelling the behaviours and values expected in disability support.

Leadership & Human Impact

This role shaped the foundation of my leadership approach. Working in disability support taught me how to stay composed under pressure, how to communicate with clarity and empathy, and how to support people through emotionally charged and unpredictable situations.

I strengthened my capability in:

  • leading with patience, compassion, and emotional intelligence

  • managing conflict and de‑escalating challenging situations

  • supporting staff wellbeing and confidence

  • making sound decisions in high‑pressure environments

  • balancing the needs of clients, families, and staff

  • maintaining professionalism and integrity in sensitive circumstances

Legacy

My early career in disability support gave me a deep appreciation for human complexity, resilience, and dignity. It grounded me in values‑based leadership and shaped the way I approach people, teams, and organisational challenges today. These experiences continue to influence how I lead, communicate, and support others — especially in environments undergoing change or facing uncertainty.
