Career Transition & Sole Trader Period
2019 – February 2022
During this period, I operated my own digital consultancy, Southern Vales Digital Solutions, while also navigating significant changes in my personal life. I made a deliberate decision to step back from full‑time business operations to prioritise stability, structure, and the wellbeing of my young children. This transition was intentional, values‑driven, and grounded in the belief that my children needed a present, healthy father during their early years — and that I could always return to business ownership later if the circumstances were right.
What I Focused On During This Period
I ran a successful digital consultancy supporting small businesses, NFPs, and residential clients with cloud migrations, cyber uplift, system modernisation, and strategic technology advice.
I maintained long‑term advisory relationships with clients, providing support, troubleshooting, and guidance without formal contracts, based on trust and reliability.
I strengthened my commercial acumen, customer‑centric mindset, and architectural problem‑solving skills through hands‑on delivery and full business ownership.
I managed all aspects of the business — financials, operations, marketing, service delivery, and vendor engagement — building a broad capability base that continues to shape my leadership today.
Why I Transitioned Back Into Organisational Roles
As my personal circumstances changed, I recognised that running a business while raising two very young children and managing the household alone was no longer sustainable. I needed the stability, predictability, and financial security that employment provides — not for myself, but for my children.
I made a conscious decision to pause the business and return to organisational roles because:
my children needed a stable, present father during a critical stage of their development
I was carrying the full load of parenting, household management, and business operations
I wanted to ensure long‑term financial security during a period of personal transition
I knew I could always restart the business later, but I could not redo my children’s early years
How I Exited the Business
I wound down the consultancy with dignity and professionalism:
I communicated openly with clients
I ensured continuity and smooth handover
I left every relationship intact
I maintained the option to return to consultancy in the future
Leadership & Personal Impact
This period strengthened my resilience, clarity, and values‑based decision‑making. It taught me how to prioritise what matters most, how to lead myself through uncertainty, and how to make difficult choices with integrity. These experiences continue to shape the way I lead teams, manage complexity, and support others through change.
